A tremendous progress has been made in the art of building construction in

the modern times. Today many buildings having more than 100 storeys have

been constructed.

It is on the west bank of the Potomac River in Arlington, Virginia, usa.it was

built to house the U.S defence department’s office. It is a building with five

sides and five storeys.that is why it was named “THE PENTAGON”. Its

construction was completed on January 15; 1943.its cost of construction was

about 83,000,000 dollars on that day.

It has five concentric pentagons-one enclosing the other. Each outer side is

281 m (921 feet) long. The perimeter of the building is 1,370-meter (1500

yard).the five storey’s of the building enclose a floor area of 604,000 sq m

(6500000 sq ft).about 29,000 people work in the building. The pentagon has

the world’s largest telephone system.The Pentagon houses approximately

23,000 military and civilian employees and about 3,000 non-defense support

personnel.

It has two restaurants, six cafeterias, and ten snack bars with the staff of 675

people. One has to cover a distance of 28.2 km (17.5 miles) just walk all its

ring and corridors from the basements to its fifth floor. It has 7,748 windows.

On September 11,2001, hijacked Americans airlines flight 77was

crashed into the western side of the Pentagon, killing 184 people,

including 59 people aboard the plane and 125 working in the

building.
